Tango down: Anonymous hacktivists take down Chicago city websites in solidarity with NATO protesters.
The City Of Chicago website, as well as the Chicago Police website, were taken off line Sunday, May 20, by hacktivists associated with the international Internet collective known as Anonymous.
CBS Chicago reports the main portal to cityofchicago.org was not accessible Sunday morning, and the Chicago Police Department website, cityofchicago.org/police, was also down.
Anonymous hacktivists used a series of successful distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Chicago government websites. A DDoS attack is an orchestrated attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. A DDoS attack does no permanent damage; the website is not hacked, and no information is tampered with, lost or stolen. Instead, the website is simply made unavailable to other web users for a short period of time.
The attacks on Chicago city websites are apparently being coordinated by AntiS3curityOPS @AntiS3curityOPS. The following is an excerpt from a transcript of a YouTube video no longer available announcing the action. The transcript comes via Cyber War News:
Greetings fellow citizens of the world, we are AntiS3curityOPS…
This is not a time to have our differences divide us, this is a time we all need to come together and rally around our brother’s and sister’s bravely in the street’s of Chicago risking their lives to make the one voice they have, heard. If every single one of us has a voice, one opinion, let us unite and show the violent Chicago police, and the government big brother tactic’s that we are not gonna take this.
We are actively engaged in actions against the Chicago Police Deptartment, and encourage anyone to take up the cause and use the AntiS3curityOPS Anonymous banner. For those able, chicagopolice.org should be fired upon as much as possible. We are in your harbor Chicago, and you will not forget us.
So for those unable to engage in attacks online by ddos, share with everyone you know what’s presently going on in Chicago, Tweet celebrities on twitter with the #SolidarityWithChicago #FTP hashtags and get it trending. Also keep watching the live feed’s, and spreading the live feed links all relevant places. Together, we the people, are gonna take the power back.
We are AntiS3curityOPS.
We are Anonymous.
We are legion.
We do not forget.
We do not forgive.
Chicago Police Department, expect us.
AP reports that protesters gathering in Chicago for the NATO summit geared up Sunday for the largest demonstration of the weekend, as thousands are expected to march from a downtown park to the lakeside convention center where President Barack Obama and other world leaders were meeting.
In addition to the successful attacks against the city of Chicago, reports indicate that the NATO website was also taken offline by Anonymous, on Sunday, May 20, in solidarity with NATO protesters.
